Yes, the bastions had mostly survived well on their own but in recent years, with EU funding, there’s been a real renovation project going on to get them protected. It’s wonderful seeing them come back to glory. Some though are in danger of just being lost. One bastion formed the backdrop to the most recent Gladiator film!
It was interesting as they built a whole Roman town using the fort as a base to form the studio. We were allowed to go and visit it before it was all dismantled, fascinating!
