No UK museum would display so many human remains . It would be considered 'morbid' and 'distasteful' and we'd be concerned about the human rights of the deceased. We work hard at pretending that nobody is going to die, ever... Must check if I can take this one in on the way to/from the Vanoise next summer. (Where I'll be looking out for weird ferns)
Got it! This of course crossed my mind while at the museum and while writing, since it's also rather uncommon in the US. But recently that's also because of trying to right the wrongs of colonialism, which is less of an issue in metropolitan France. My archaeologist friend also says it's "very French" to be so cavalier about bodies (and maybe also Catholic). She also said medieval spirits are pretty used to graves being disturbed so they probably aren't more than slightly embarrassed 😂
That site does look fascinating, and a bit quirky too. It's not surprising I missed this post -- I had just gotten back from the USA. A whole week of newsletters went unopened. Thanks for guiding me back to it!
A wonderful article, Anne💕
Thank you!
Amazing. Could not exist in UK I don't think. Is this in Grenoble?
Ah, why is that? There is a lot of archaeological activity in the UK, probably even more than France! And yes, it's in Grenoble.

What a fabulous place! I'd love to see it.

We love us a quirky French museum!
I am tragically behind on newsletter reading, so I totally understand! Glad you got to read this one :)
