Great post which brought back many memories for me, my most recent trip being to Grindelwald in 2013, marking the 75th anniversary of the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger. It was sobering to be told that climate change means no one climbs the North Face in summer any more, as well as to see how glaciers have receded.
We did the via ferrata up the Rotstock, which looks like a little lump on the side of the North Face but would be a huge crag by British standards. Slept on the top.
And many years ago (1991 I think) I climbed the Wetternorn.
What a gorgeous post. As I said in Notes, I was on a Substack vacation for most of August, so only saw a few of your notes. I love the way you weave them into this post, and take us on your 11-day journey so succinctly, yet pertinently, here.
I was 100%, completely obsessed with Switzerland when I was a kid - blame it on Heidi - but have so far only managed to visit Basel and Lucerne. I've loved following along with you in your detail diaries! Looks like an amazing trip.
I finally got around to reading this and I'm so glad I did! Absolutely stunning!! It's also nostalgic for me. I grew up visiting the Austrian Alps every other summer, but haven't been able to go back in over 20 years.
It was truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. Thank you so much for the photos and transporting me to that magical place. Glad I found your newsletter.

Did you do any climbing? And agreed, many sobering things about these mountains.

Heidi is responsible for a lot of Switzerland fantasizing I think! And it’s deserving!
Superb photos, happy memories. (And if you're up for it, the Tour of Monte Rosa is a superb hike)
Thanks for reading! Good to know about Tour of Monte Rosa, that was one mountain I didn’t get a very good idea of.
If I hadn’t been on this trip myself I wouldn’t believe it. Thank you for documenting it so beautifully!
