"Sometimes I cycle along the river Isère, looking at the Chartreuse massif, and feel about ready to burst with all the story potential stored behind those cliffs."
:-) Doesn’t this statement give off ‘other Anne’ vibes? The one once described as ‘…in love with beauty and a dreamer of great imagination."
Finally got around to reading this. Happy Anniversary, Anne. Lovely new logo. The photos are stunning.
You’ll probably not like this connection, but it also reads like a nice, non off-putting ‘how I grew my substack’
Also love that you’ve got so many ideas coming up. So much to write about, so little time. You just seem genuinely pleased/excited to be here, doing this. That’s energising.
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoy your posts. Life in our house is mostly Good Madness, so I appreciate those moments I can line up a cup of tea and escape into your writing. I enjoyed reading this, and I'm glad you found time for this reflection on the past year - I am very much looking forward to the next year of your writing and adventures, and beyond! Gorgeous logo, too!
This is so wonderful. What a year and what a place to spend it. So glad to have discovered your words, Anne … there’s plenty I haven’t read yet so this is the perfect prompt to dive in a little deeper. Happy One Year Anniversary. Keep those beautiful words flowing.
I'm delighted to discover your Substack. I spent a year as an English language assistant in Le Péage de Roussillon, near Vienne, as part of my French degree, many years ago. Lyon was the city I visited most often, as very easy to reach by train, but I had a few Grenoble visits. It was the surrounding area that I remember with great pleasure - cross country skiing with Club Léo Lagrange at Le Désert d'Entremont, and visits to the Col du Lautaret in June to see the fields of wild narcissi. With climate change I imagine they're blooming much later now? Looking forward to reading back through your posts and to new posts.
Linda I'm so glad you discovered it! Lovely to hear about your past sojourns here. I'll have to look for the narcissi next time I'm in Lautaret--I'm actually going next week, but it's still snowy up there. If anything, though, I would expect them to bloom earlier these days?
There's something utterly satisfying about reading this post, remembering all the joy and interest you've brought me, personally, and every other reader, too. And then I remember I've still got several such treats to read, like chocolates left in the box because to eat them all at once is foolhardy.
So glad the internet brought our paths together: your voice, your eye, and your knowledge truly enrich. Thank you! (And I'm also very excited to see what this next year brings, not least because of the walk you mention, but for everything else you have planned, too. And, no doubt, things you've not even thought of yet.)
Ditto to all of the above, Alex! Thank you thank you! And yes, I imagine I'll end up writing about whatever place I happen to stumble on before half the things I listed!
I have just found your posts and they are so interesting and absorbing! I will return to dip in as I find your flow fascinating thank you.
That’s wonderful to hear, Kate, welcome along!

Oh good! I'm very excited to see where it goes and it's nice to know someone else will be looking for it!
All the photos are so beautiful. But my favorite is the 3rd and 4th and the library photo too. ❤️ Im glad to be introduced to Grenoble.
